After undergoing training under eminent Gurus Laisram Mongoljao Singh and Chaubu Sharma, Guru Amubi Singh (also known as Oja Amubi) devoted his life to field of Manipuri dance. At a time where there was not much exposure to this form in the rest of the  country,Amubi singh came out of Imphal to teach Manipuri Dancing and was associated with Uday Shankar’s academy. Besides a renowned dancer, he also studied many martial forms and is a well known composer.

In 1954 when JN Manipur Dance academy was established Amubi Singh became its first supervisor. He received the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 1956 and the Padma Shri in 1970.
