Bajinath Prasad Lacchu Maharaj

Kathak maestro Lacchu Maharaj belonged to an illustrious family of Kathak artists from Lucknow representing the Lucknow gharana, which has produced stars of the calibre of Birju Maharaj. He was a son of the celebrated Kalka Prasad and trained rigorously with his uncle Bindadin Maharaj, a renowned court dancer of Awadh. He also learnt Hindustani vocal music, the tabla and the pakhawaj. Noted Kathak dancers Acchan Maharaj and Shambu Maharaj were his brothers. Lacchu Maharaj served as the Director of the Lucknow Kathak Akademy,  now named after him.

Moving to Mumbai, Lacchu Maharaj worked in several memorable films as a Kathak choreographer. Mughal-e-azam and Pakeezah were among the films noted for his exquisite choreography. He also served as the President of the Cine Dance Directors Association.

Maharaj was conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award  in1957. He passed away in 1978.
