Born in 1929, Krishna or Dipanwita Roy was a renowned actor and formed a formidable duo with husband Tarun Roy. Together they are known to have created an alternative, intimate space for Bengali theatre in the 1950s.

Krishna Roy was a skilled singer and dancer of Bharatanatyam, Kathak, and Manipuri in college. In 1958, she took classes at Leichner Studio, London, in voice and stagecraft. Her first prominent role was in Tarun Roy’s Rajanigandha in 1959. The couple married in 1962.

Her memorable roles were in Tarun Roy’s Ek Peyala Coffee and Dilip Roy’s Aghatan Ajo Ghate in 1962, and Parajita Nayak, Athacha Sanjukta, and Shorashi in 1975. In Bisha-briksha (1979), based on Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s novel she was appreciated for playing the male role.
