Sova Sen

Sova Sen is a renowned Bengali theatre and film personality. Born in 1923, she began her acting career with the Indian People`s Theatre Association (IPTA). Her performance in Bijon Bhattacharya’s Nabanna in 1944 brought her into prominence. She also played memorable roles in films like Paribartan in 1949, Chhinnamul in 1950, Babla in 1951, and Nagarik in 1952.

Joining the Little Theatre Group in 1953-54 which later became Peoples’ Theatre Group, Sova Sen has acted in many productions of the group, chief among them being Barricade, Tiner Taloyar, Titumir. She also acted in Utpal Dutt’s Jatra productions like Rifle in 1968. She played the female lead in the Bengali productions of plays like Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Twelfth Night, Othello, A Midsummer Night`s Dream, and Romeo and Juliet.

Sova Sen married Utpal Dutt in 1961. After Dutt`s death, she has been supervising the PLT, and the managing trustee of the Utpal Dutt Foundation of International Theatre Studies.
