Born in 1934, Sabitabrata Dutta was a multifaceted Bengali theatre personality, adeptly combining the skills of acting, singing and directing. He began his career as an actor in the theatre group Bohurupee in 1948. His acting was highly appreciated in Tulsi Lahiri’s Pathik in 1949 and Rabindranath Tagore’s Raktakarabi in 1954. In 1955 he formed his own group – Rupakar– along with Lahiri and Gita Bhaduri. In Rupakar, his directing talent came to the fore with the comic productions of Sukumar Ray’s Chalachittachanchari in 1957 and Amritalal Basu’s Byapika Biday in 1960. He also established his own style of theatre, using his musical skills in productions of Manmatha Ray’s Lalan Fakir in 1970, Nidhubabur tappa in 1979, and Nazrul in 1980. He also gained popularity as a singing hero in commercial theatre.

Sabitabrata Dutta featured as an actor and playback singer in a number of films and was most known for his patriotic songs. He died in 1995.
