Tirupanandal Pattabhiramaiah

Tirupanandal Pattabhiramaiah

Tirupanandal Pattabhiramaiah was a 19th century composer known for his exquisite javalis. Examples of his compositions are Marubari talalenura in Khamas, Vanipondu in Kanada, Muttavaddura in Saveri and Merakadu in Athana. These compositions couch the sahitya beautifully with rich raga bhava. His javalis, which as dance pieces demand abhinaya, are very well suited for such explorations.

Pattabhiramaiah was a native of Tirupanandal, very close to the Bharatanatyam centre of Pandanallur or Pandanainallur. He was well versed in Telugu, Kannada and Tamil and his compositions were known for madhura bhakti. He used the mudra - Garbhapurusha, Ganapureesa and Talavan. Tirupunandal was known as Talavaneswaram in Sanskrit. His javalis were dedicated to the deity of the temple in Tatakeswaram near Kumbakonam.

Pattabhiramaiah served as a clerk in the taluk offices of Tanjavur district. Impressed with his compositions, the Maharajah of Mysore Chamarajah Wodeyar offered him a post at the comptroller’s office in Mysore. He was felicitated in Bangalore in 1912 for his musical prowess.

His disciples included musicians like Madras Lalithangi, mother of M L Vasanthakumari, and Jayammal, the mother of T Balasaraswati.

Some more of his compositions:

Apadooruku lonaitine and Modi jesevelra (Khamas), and Paripovalera (Bilahari).
