Ganesh Rajagopalan and Kumaresh Rajagopalan are violinist brothers who were hailed as child prodigies, when they gave their first public performance in 1972. Ganesh was just seven and Kumaresh five then.
Since then, the brothers have performed in different places in India and in a number of countries across the globe and have been the only violin duo to have performed for more than four decades together.
Trained by their violinist father T. S. Rajagopalan, Ganesh-Kumaresh completed their hundredth stage appearance before the younger brother was ten years old. By the time they were into their teens, they were performing with the veterans in the musical field.
They have made exhilarating forays into world music, teaming up with artists like Balamurali Krishna, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Vikku Vinayakram, Valangaiman Shanmugasundaram, AR Rehman, John Mclaughlin, Ilayaraja, Rajan Mishra-Sajan Mishra, Umayalpuram Sivaraman, Palghat Raghu, TK Murthy, Steve Thornton and Trilok Gurtu, among others.
Their deep-rooted strength in playing Carnatic music in the traditional way has been responsible for their supreme confidence on the performance stage. Liked by audiences beyond the Carnatic music circuit, the duo does face disapproval from the purists. Yet their virtuosity and innovative genius have earned the appreciation of thousands of music lovers across the globe. The brothers have given new dimensions to the realm of music by composing several pieces exclusively for violin playing without the aid of lyrics.
The awards and titles Ganesh and Kumaresh have received include the Tamil Nadu Government’s Kalaimamani in 1997, State Artistes of Tamil Nadu in 1984, the title of Asthana Vidwans from the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt and Srimad Andavan Ashramam Srirangam, the Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu Award from the Andhra Pradesh Government and
the P Obul Reddy and Gnanambal Award, among others.
