Sanjay Subrahmanyan

Sanjay Subrahmanyan is an accomplished Carnatic vocalist. He balances the passion for music with a penchant for numbers as a Chartered Accountant and a rank-holding Cost Accountant. Born on January 21, 1968, in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, he began learning music at the age of seven. In the early years of his musical journey he learnt the violin as well as vocal music under the tutelage of V. Lakshminarayana. He later switched to vocal music and was trained by Rukmini Rajagopalan for a period of almost eight years. He continues to be mentored by Nadaswaram maestro Semponarkoil S.R.D. Vaidyanathan. 

His commanding voice and energetic rendition style have been widely appreciated. A respected teacher, Subrahmanyan has many successful students such as Prashanth Viswanathan, Swarna Rethas, Sandeep Narayan, and Prasanna Venkatraman in the contemporary music field. He has been the subject of a documentary film Aaraar Aasaippadaar by filmmaker Prasanna Ramaswamy in 2006. 

A top grade artiste of All India Radio, he has performed extensively in India and abroad. Among several prestigious honours conferred on him are ‘Vani-kala-sudhakara’ from Tyaga Brahma Gana Sabha in 2010, Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu Government for the year 2006, ‘Isai Peroli’ title from Karthik Fine arts, Chennai in 2000 and Sangeetha Kalasarathy title from Sri Parthasarathy Swami Sabha, Chennai in December 2006.
