Kalyani was born to Shri T.V.Panchapakesan and Radha of Tanjore District, Tamilnadu. She had her basic music lessons from her mother Later she came under the tutelage of Sangeethabhushanam T.S.Krishnaswamy of Shanmukananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha, Mumbai, She started her musical journey as an accompanying artist at the age of 14 and has several hundreds of performances since. She received advanced training in the nuances of swara and raga playing from Prof. Shri V.V.Subrahmanyam

Kalyani has given several vocal concerts along with her elder sister Lakshmi and the duo was popular as Matunga Sisters. As a violinist, she has accompanied top ranking artistes and taught violin at Shanmukhananda Fine Arts, Mumbai. Kalyani is also a commerce graduate from R.A Podar college of Commerce and Economics, Matunga, Mumbai.
